For many people, the idea of a bus terminal is the thing that haunts their dreams and nightmares, but for Malaysian architect Ahmad Derakson, it was a chance to design something truly unique. The main feature of his concept — a canopy over the bus stop — represents both an opportunity to break with tradition and provide shelter from the sun and rain. This site explores its development into reality through photos and interviews. What has been one of your challenges in your area of study? When I first began my Architecture Minor at Cornell University I had no experience in designing buildings; everything I knew about architecture came from books or other students. I had no idea how to design an entrance, walkway, or even the simplest form of furniture. It was challenging trying to figure out how people would use these spaces and to come up with ways of accommodating them. I volunteered at Cornell’s School of Architecture and Planning (SAp) for two years before I began my senior year. While working in the office I got great exposure to many different types of buildings; all the while, I was getting better at drawing spatial relationships between them. What does architecture mean to you? To me, architecture is about making things that are comfortable and interesting for people. It’s not just about making structures that work, but creating structures that people want to live and work in. What do you think is the most important concept in your thesis? I think the most important concept in my thesis is the idea of bringing people back to nature. People need nature as much as they need industry. Due to the way cities are structured, many individuals live away from green environments and close to noisy streets. The dome will serve as a place for people to enjoy nature again, especially since there are no tall buildings around this area. The bus stop will also shield people from any noise coming from outside it. This feature is important because it creates a pleasant area for everyone who uses it. What is the real-world impact of your project? The dome will provide a cool place for tired travelers to gather, and at the same time it will give people who live nearby a refuge from wind, rain, and noise. It will be an exciting place for people to rest because the bus stop has the potential to be different than what you would normally see. The structure provides a lot of shade, which is very important in Kuala Lumpur because of the blazing sun. I think this bus terminal will really open up people’s minds about how they can incorporate nature into city life. What is your favorite part about your area of study? When I think about my project I’m thinking about the whole process of the building. This project is going to be a lot of work, but it will be well worth it in the end. When you start out on something new, you don’t know what you’re going to get. This mix of tradition and novelty makes your project interesting.
